After that, Zenith went to PC boards like everyone else. The newest set that I've seen with that chassis was from November, '79. This one had PC board modules that plugged into the metal chassis but, there was still plenty of point to point wiring on that chassis. After that, they came out with the upright fold down solid state chassis. The only PC boards were the small plug in duramodules that attached to the top of the chassis. The 25EC58 chassis, for example, was 100% solid state and used in 25" color TV's and was built on a horizontal tube style chassis. It's also interesting that Zenith made handwired steel chassis TV's up into the '70's. Judging from the Sams index, it was made in '68-'69. My Zenith is the newer chassis with the PC board attached to a metal frame. I wonder if that set featured in the ARC article was Zenith's first AC only solid state radio. I think I remember seeing a Sams Photofact on that handwired Zenith and the ARC article prompted me to place a wanted ad for one of those sets in the classified section here. I've seen several Zenith solid state table radios but, they were all in plastic cabinets. The radio came in six standard colors: black, white, cloud gray, mandarin red, mottled mahogany, and jade green (see Figure 1 ). It utilized a 22.5 V battery, which to my knowledge was the only fully transistorized radio to ever use this battery. BTW, I don't think I've seen this particular model Zenith before. The TR-1 cost 49.95 a princely sum back then. I hope to soon patch it up and make it look presentable. This was the only radio that survived (with a few more battle scars). Shortly after I got it, the shelf that it was sitting on fell apart and this radio, along with some 78 rpm records and some Bakelite radios hit the floor. This radio was a little beat up when I got it but, is more beat up now. I guess this one was made before Zenith started outsourcing their radios from Korea and Taiwan. It actually plays nice and has good reception. Silent Key: Joined: Jan 12:00 am Posts: 19020 Zenith 5B08R - Working, receives stations with static, no hum. He always told me that when he died, he wanted me to take that radio home before I did anything else. Post subject: FS: Plastic Table Radios - Zenith, RCA, Westinghouse. It sat on top of his refrigerator for my entire life and he played it every morning. I'm guessing this to be a '69 model from the "Z" prefix in the model number. : Shortwave Radio AM/FM/SW1-6 Radio Transistor Radio AC or Battery Operated with Best Reception USB/SD Port Big Speaker and Precise Tuning Knob & 3. This is a beat up old Zenith solid state AM/FM table radio that I inherited from my Uncle when he passed away in '94.
